There you go, making me think again. Last week, I explored the topic of fate (here and here) and I received some honest and insightful comments. I wrote that I believe, somewhere between taking action and letting go, fate steps in.
But if you look at the literal definition of fate (something that unavoidably befalls a person; that which is inevitably predetermined) I honestly can’t say I believe everything that happens in our lives boils down to an unavoidable and predetermined fate. Because if that’s true, then what’s the point? Why even get out of bed in the morning?
I have two friends (both my age, both moms of young children) who have cancer. The news has rocked their worlds and the worlds of those who know and love them. One is praying for complete healing and has an army of supporters doing the same thing. Not as many people know about my other friend’s cancer, yet her attitude and mindset is that she has too much to live for to give in to the disease. They are both fighting for their lives with the belief they will win.
Here’s what I know: there’s a lot I don’t know. Some things happen that seem meant to be. The circumstances line up so perfectly in my favor it blows my mind. Then there are other things that happen that make absolutely no sense at all.
Perhaps in some cases, our fate is out of our control. But maybe, in other cases, our fate is negotiable. I’m clearly not a theologian, and thanks to your comments, I’ve spent a lot of time this week looking up words in the dictionary:
Providence- the foreseeing care and guidance of God or nature over the creatures of the earth, the manifestation of divine care or direction.
Discernment- the act or process of exhibiting keen insight and good judgment.
Faith- belief not based on proof
One reader suggested that faith, fate and providence are somehow all working together. To me, it’s a dance. Feeling the rhythm, not controlling the steps. Learning to accept the things I cannot change; having the courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference.
Keep the comments coming. This blog is a platform for open-minded, respectful discussion…a place for conversation and connection. All are welcome.

I have been meaning to send you a quick note. We are reading a book in my Sunday school class, “A Thankful Heart” by Carole Lewis. It’s been said that this book is “a gift to those who have felt overwhelmed by circumstances.” One of her exercises is to write down five things that your are thankful for each day. I am REALLY enjoying it and it touches on your latest writing. Pick it up if you get the chance. As always, love your work.
Thanks, Heather. The book looks great– here’s the link to Amazon to “look inside” the book.
