Who is Lou Mello?

Me with Lou Mello and Andra Watkins

Friends, it had to be done. After months and months of speculation, I dusted off my reporter hat and asked what we all want to know: Who is Lou Mello? Around here, and on other blogs, he’s developed quite a reputation. In other words, he gets around. He comments on blogs, a lot. And he’s usually first.

So how does he do it? I took to the streets to find out. If you can’t see the video click here.

So what do you think? Is Lou Mello a bot? Does he have minions? Is he the Energizer Bunny or 3-D avatar? Some suggest he’s a real, live human. Do you buy it?

  1. And this just shows that you understand how to tell a story! GREAT fun! That Lou, he’s hardly mello(w)! Don’t you think we should ask Mello(w) Mushroom to name a pizza after him? And give a portion of the sale of each pie to the Rotary Scholars program?

  2. Dena says:

Ahhh! I love this post so much and more importantly, I love Lou Mello! I don’t know how he does it, but I’m sure glad that he does.

Thanks for this, Angie. Super adorable and I just love that photograph of the three of you. :)

  3. We must be honest, he is not real. Lou is a creation of Angie and Andra’s mind. He is really kind of a Franken-Lou! Or maybe a puppet Lou?

But it does make you wonder, if he has all this time now, how much more commenting will he do once he retires in two years?! Scary thought…

    • Angie says:

Goes to show you how powerful our minds are! And when Lou retires, Andra and I are going to have a real Franken-monster on our hands. :

  4. Tom Smith says:

    What a threesome!

Oh I had to chuckle when I saw this post in my email Inbox this morning. It’s a question I’ve been asking myself. I have begun to laugh when I find a blog that is new to me and always near the top of the comments is Lou Mello. I think he reads half of the 152 million blogs out there and comments on almost all of them :) The thing is, his comments are not the “great post” type, he actually puts a lot of thought and humor into his comments. I don’t know how he does it, but I sure enjoy reading his comments on blogs; they are in their own way his blog! Thank you Angie for answering this question :)

  6. Lou Mello says:

OH MY! I guess I am a total Geek! Hilarious comments by everyone and YES, CARNELL, I will be coming after you full time when I retire. BWAAA HAAAA HAAAA.

On a serious note…nah, just kidding…..FUN IS GOOD!!

    • Roh Roh. An entire post dedicated to you and you aren’t the first commenter. Ah the irony.

      • Lou Mello says:

Vera, you are right, my mini-bots let me down, must have been the same scalliwags that hacked Angie, they stole my bots.

        • Angie says:

I didn’t want to point fingers, but the timing is uncanny. And Lou, even though you weren’t the first to comment, you may still be a winner. I think “Who is Lou Mello?” now has more comments than any other post on this blog.

  7. I love this post, and I love Lou Mello.

  8. I must be missing something. I clicked on the YouTube video and the “click here” link and it says that the video has been removed by the user, sorry. (sob). I was looking forward to watching something about King Lou….. I have an hour to get ready to get my stuff packed and head to the airport but I will try to revisit this later on today.

  9. It was wonderful to meet Lou and Teresa in person on Saturday. It great meeting online friends in person because you can just pick up the conversation and keep running with it.

    • Angie says:

I loved how Teresa said he doesn’t have his own blog because he’s always on everyone else’s blogs.

  10. Ok, I told you that I missed something. LOL… The actual video was nestled into a comment. I just watched it and I thought it was very cute. :) I suspect that it will go viral very shortly.

  11. Hi Angie,

Loved the story. Really fun. And it could be a series where you travel the country meeting commenters. Too funny. Lou even came to my blog! Thank you Lou for stopping by. Really enjoyed it.

Now, do you all live in the same town? That’s the next question I want answered.

    Thx, G.

    • Giulietta, I will answer this one. We (all these commenters) don’t all live in the same town, but a core group of commenters do. Back in December, I had a blog party to get the people who live in Charleston together face-to-face. I think it solidified their interest in ‘getting together’ in cyberspace, and it probably makes them feel more connected, leading to more commentary. I had another blog party last weekend, and that’s where Angie filmed this footage.

I think blog parties are really good ideas, especially if you have readers close by.

Incidentally, I have met other, further flung commenters on my blog. If I visit the particular location of one, I always reach out and try to meet them in person. I’ve never been disappointed.

      • Angie says:

Andra, I left that party feeling so upbeat and happy. You started something that has led to something really great — genuine connections. Online and in real life.

G — I love your idea. And I’m looking forward to the day I turn my Flip toward you. Maybe on Karaoke night?

  12. Lou Mello says:

Hey G, love your “storm the Bastille” approach to life!

  13. Abby says:

Yes! Lou needs to start his own blog! Mello’s Musings? Hello, Mello? Y’ello Mello?

    • Lou Mello says:

Hey Abby! I’m too busy following folks that can really write and have so many better things to say than moi. By the way, where’s my ice cream??

      • Angie says:

Wait a minute… Abby is on to something. Maybe each day, you can post all your comments. Like where in the world is Lou Mello? And you can be like, “Well, friends, today I visited these blogs, this is what they talked about and this is what I had to say about it.”

Most bloggers would kill for a cool name like Lou Mello. I vote for Y’ello Mello. It’s really quite clever.

  14. Topaz says:

I love this post, Angie! And I love Lou, too! Most days I think Lou is my one single reader, but that doesn’t phase him at all. He is always there with a sincere, thoughtful comment. He is such a sweetheart! I love how he has made a name for himself by being such a faithful reader on so many of our blogs. Lou, the lowcountry would not be the same without you! So glad you are here and part of so many of our lives!

    • Lou Mello says:

So how is the young traveler doing so far? Hope he is staying in touch with home base. Looking forward to post about his adventures.

      • Topaz says:

He’s enjoying his new life! Today is the first day we didn’t have a chance to talk, but we did get to text a little. I went out with friends, and he was busy taking care of stuff for Robert, and then he went to watch them practice today. That had to be pretty cool! I can’t wait until I visit! You are so sweet to ask! It’s been quite the adjustment. It’s help talking to him almost every day.

        • Lou Mello says:

Why am I not surprised to see the “night owl” commenting at 1:04 am? That’s kinda like just starting the wind down to your day. Glad he’s doing well and staying in touch with you each day.

    • Angie says:

Tammy, you summed it up perfectly. I look forward to Lou’s comments. He is thoughtful and adds so much to the discussion. And even after a few years of blogging, it’s always fun to get that first comment.

  15. Liz DeLoach says:

Great post and great video, Angie! I say Lou is awesome!!!

  16. Angie says:

Lou, a sincere thanks for being such a good sport today. I know I speak for myself and all of the other bloggers who have gotten to know you in person and/or via your comments — we really appreciate you!

  17. Amanda says:

Lou, you are a reassuring staple of my blog reading that is as much a part of the enjoyment as the posts themselves. And thanks for your attention to all those FB posts and pics too! Brilliant video, Angie, you say it all so well. (I’m glad I managed to stifle the laughter while you were filming!)

    • Lou Mello says:

Thanks, Amanda, I enjoy your FB and T thoughts and especially seeing the girls. Tell Nathan I found the Charleston Pickle Co site and it’s very cool. Soooooo, I guess that crazy giggling in the background was not you, but, undoubtedly the slightly?? wacky @Carnellm

  18. Jennie B says:

Angie – this is awesome! Love when Lou stops by The Sassy Steel Magnolia, always a joy to see his comments. Thanks for sharing!

  19. Bella Rum says:

So glad someone finally delved into this.

  20. Erin says:

Ha! This is my first introduction to Lou but I feel like we’re good friends after reading all of the comments.

  21. Lori says:

The picture of the three of you brings a smile of joy to my face! Ha, how can you not smile? :) Happy Birthday to you Lou.
