Another year. That is the gift.

I will publish this post at exactly 6:37am this morning--the time I was born, 36 years ago today. I almost let this birthday go by without much fanfare. It's so easy for me to get caught up in the daily routines and forget to celebrate the fact that adding another candle to the cake is a gift, in and of itself.

This year was marked with tragedy-- losing a former business partner and friend to melanoma. She was a 33-year-old mom and wife, with a 4-year-old son. She didn't want to die. I think about her and her family almost every day.

And this year was also marked with miracles-- a childhood friend battling Stage 4 breast cancer got amazing test results that read: No evidence of disease. She, too, a mother of young children. Also in her 30's.

Life is like that. It breaks our heart and fills us with unexplainable joy. But I'm willing to ride the ride as long as I can.

So today, when I blow out the candles, I'll simply say thank you.
