"Girl in the Spotlight" is now an audiobook!

If you’ve been reading Hello Friday since Girl in the Spotlight came out two years ago, or even longer than that (when I was a young mom chasing little kids around and writing in the cracks of time), then maybe you’ll understand why this announcement feels like it’s breathing new life into everything—into the story, into the message inside of it, into me.

A month after the book was released, my mom got very sick, and she died eight months later. And in that same span of time, my oldest son was finishing high school, graduating, and leaving for college.

2024 was a whirlwind. It was a mix of a dream coming true, profound loss, and transition all at once.

Grief has its own timeline. You can’t rush it. I spent most of 2025 recalibrating, slowly trying to feel like myself again. And when I finally felt the nudge last fall that it was time to record the audiobook, I said yes to that nudge.

Narrating my own story illuminated a question I keep returning to: why does a decision I made to leave my career in TV news two decades ago still feel so alive to me? It’s because the lesson inside it is timeless.

Learning to trust yourself, coming home to who you actually are—that is the work. It’s not a one-time thing. It’s a decision we make every day.

I wrote Girl in the Spotlight for the younger version of me, and I wrote it for every version of me that has come after. And I wrote it for you, too. I wrote it for anyone who has ever stood at a crossroads, wondering which path to take. I wrote it for the one who’s working to heal from family cycles that were passed down to them. I wrote it for the one trying to quiet the noise of the world so they can hear their own heart and soul speak. I wrote it for the one who’s ever struggled to keep up with the arbitrary timelines society projects onto us, along with its very narrow views of success.

So, if you’ve been meaning to read Girl in the Spotlight but haven’t gotten around to it, I have the next best thing. Let me read it to you.

This week on More Like You with Angie Mizzell, I went deeper into all of it—why I wrote this book, what it meant to leave a career that had shaped my whole identity, and why this message still feels urgent to me. If you’ve ever wondered what this work is really about, that episode is the place to start.
